ABOUT KEPPIE
Hi I'm Keppie! I'm a professional songwriter, and songwriting teacher. I've been teaching song and lyric writing for over 10 years now for some of the best contemporary music colleges in the world- Berklee Online, the Sydney Conservatorium of Music's Open Academy, as well as for the Australian College of the Arts. At other times, I've taught for the Australian Institute of Music, as well as the LA School of Songwriting.
My goal is to help people write better songs! My experience in the classroom, with thousands of students at this point (many going on to find careers and success in music), is that your songwriting, like all things, can get better with meaningful, deliberate practice. My intention is to share the skills, knowledge, information, and ideas that I've gathered with anyone who wants to improve their songwriting.

    I’m in the mindset that first thing you really don’t know when and where and how a song will occur. It could be a great title that all the lines revolve around or a great line that all the melodies support or simply a tune in your mind and, later, it ignites the words and images. I think it’s crazy to approach a song’s birth in one way. You absolutely have no control of how it might hit you.

    Since there isn’t a single song Lennon wrote that I can’t easily play, which is not the case for either McCartney or Harrison, I would have to agree, no sarcastic quotation marks needed that Lennon’s approach was pretty basic. Though he was only a rhythm guitarist after all (I say as a rhythm guitarist).

    totally respect your tips here but didn't the Beatles prove there are no rules? Whatever you do, the song will be judged by the listeners and there are some weird ones out there that have made the charts. So for me the whole point of being an artist is to not follow any rules and be original, be yourself. The most successful artists, and that includes any artists such as a painter, have done something different to anyone else.

    Idk, I feel like John's sense of humour gives more context to what he means by this, to me, he is being sarcastic. All it takes is to have a good back beat and make it rhyme. Lol. It sounds sarcastic because, obviously, writing songs isn't as simple as that. He knows that. He's just being apathetic about the question and answering it as tongue and cheek.

    On rhyme: it helps to mix it up a little, to make it more beautiful and poetic. Is _Splish Splash_ by Bobby Darin a good example of musical onomatopoeia? What about _Walking on the Moon_ by The Police? _Live and Let Die_ by Paul McCartney _Dream Baby Dream_ by Suicide (sounds like you're at a carnival) -Killing in the Name Of_ by Rage Against the Machine (has a machine gun, menacing sound) _Thunder_ by Imagine Dragons _Headhunter_ by Front 242 _Moving in Stereo_ by The Cars _We Will Fall_ by The Stooges _Walk Like an Egyptian_ by The Bangles _Hong Kong Garden_ by Siouxie and the Banshees _Tear Drop_ by Massive Attack _I Put a Spell on You_ by Screamin' Jay Hawkins _Shakin' All Over_ by Johnny Kidd and The Pirates _Fried Neck Bones and Some Home Fries_ by Willie Bobo and Melvin _Float On_ by The Floaters _Money_ by Pink Floyd _Dark Side of the Moon_ by Pink Floyd _Paper Planes_ by MIA _Major Tom_ by David Bowie _Hallo Spaceboy_ by Bowie _China Girl_ by Bowie _Hypnotized_ by Fleetwood Mac _Train Kept a'Rollin'_ by Aerosmith _The Devil Went Down to Georgia_ by Charlie Daniels Band _Trouble Heartaches and Sadness_ by Ann Peebles _I Can't Stand the Rain_ by Ann Peebles _I Want You (She's So Heavy)_ by The Beatles _Within You Without You_ by The Beatles _Pump It Up_ by Elvis Costello _Combat Rock_ by The Clash _19_ by Paul Hardcastle _Running_ by Information Society _Run Like Hell_ by Pink Floyd _I Ran_ by A Flock of Seagulls _Flight of the Bumblebee_ by Rimsky-Korsakov _Smash It Up - Part 2_ by The Damned _Transmission_ by Joy Division _2000 Light Years From Home_ by The Rolling Stones _Radar Love_ by Golden Earring _Close Encounters of the Third Kind - Theme_ by John Williams _Weed Smokers Dream_ by Harlem Hamfats _Popcorn Sack_ by Spike Jones and His City Slickers _Popcorn Song_ by Gershon Kingsley _You Spin Me Round_ by Dead or Alive _Black Smoke Rising From the Calumet_ by Vinegar Joe _Build Me Up Buttercup_ by The Foundations _Bumble Bee Blues_ by John Lee Hooker _Bungle in the Jungle_ by Jethro Tull _Burbling_ by Al Stewart _Butterfly_ by The Hollies _The Stumble_ by Freddie King _Wipeout_ by The Surfaris _Cajun Tune_ by Taj Mahal _Cakewalk Into Town_ by Taj Mahal _Call Me The Breeze_ by Lynyrd Skynyrd _Camptown Races_ by 2nd South Carolina _Can You Hear The Wind Blow_ by Whitesnake _Candy Tongue (feat. Marie Fisker)_ by Trentemøller _Caracas_ by The Hollies _Caramel_ by Suzanne Vega _Cherry Blossom Girl_ by Air _Chilled Euphoria_ by Massive Attack _China_ by Red Rocker _Cluck Old Hen_ by Taj Mahal _Rock Island Line_ by Johnny Cash _Do You Feel Like I Do_ by Peter Frampton (actually that's probably more like anthropomorphization since he makes his guitar talk) The 2nd version of the 'Mistake' song sounded way better. I'm into this - obviously. I just read this on another channel under _Jive Talkin'_ by The Bee Gees: @JhenDArcy 2 weeks ago Read an interview where Barry said the song was "written" by the bridge he drove over to the studio each day in Florida. The "chicka-chicka-chicka-chick" was from the rickety road surface of the bridge. Hey, however great songs come about! _It's a different 'Bridge' than you were talking about in the other video, but the onomatopoeia is there_ And from Reddit: The classic example of this is Jive Talkin by the Bee Gees. The drums for that song were based on the sound their car made as it crossed a bridge in Miami, going over the bumps in the bridge.

    I think Lennon just said those words on songwriting as a general: Don't worry about it as a songwriter, just do something that feels right and don't stand in the way of what comes out. I do enjoy this video and can agree on the value of those points, but it's almost like astrology. When you look for patterns in the twinkle twinkle of a genius like Lennon, you will be able to name them "constellations", but these are intellectual concepts after the fact. Lennon was not educated in songwriting and being identified with the spirit of the era och rock n roll I believe that he also made great efforts to maintain that raw sense of spontaneity, because he wouldn't want to sound like a broadway composer. McCartney on the other hand was much less concerned about being viewed as pretentious, having grown up with jazz music played at home. I think their worlds blended in a mesmerizing and fullfilling way.

    Notes from this video: Songwriting ~ 1. Use consistent pronouns (mind your pronouns) 2. Start the song's sections on different chords 3. Start melodic phrases after the first few beats on the bar 4. Write more songs 5. Refrain-based writing: Write some songs by starting with the hook - the core message of the song, start with the chorus, start with the title, start with the bridge 🎼🎶🎹🎵📯🔔🎵🎷🎸🎶🎺🎶🎻🎵🪕🎶🥁🎵

    No wonder we make up our own lyrics (often unknowingly) when they're purposely mispronouncing words in the songs on the radio, I had no idea they were doing that. I've enjoyed making up my own lyrics though, and people used to say they liked mine better. I never noticed that John wasn't rhyming all his lines. Wow. Holy cow. Hey - that rhymed. I enjoyed this music class. Thank you. Rock on with your bad self! 🎸😝 John Lennon might still be alive. I saw a video that showed him and it was recent. He played a political song he'd just written for the camera and it was really good with his sense of humor, so somebody is either quite a genius at being able to portray him and sound just like him, or it was him. 🤷‍♂

    Silly stuff, i lived thru all that and seen them twice. Lennon was always open to suggestion in the song writing process, but once McCartney got an idea into his head it was take 63 while George and Ringo were held hostage allot of the time. Additionally, Lennon/McCartney quit writing together earlier then most internet "experts" realize. Lennon was a better lyrist but McCartney was more melodic.

    I like your perspective of knowledge Keppe. I understood the concept behind Moeller drumming for years but could not reproduce it with my hands. One evening while playing on my drum kit some random jamming suddenly I noticed that the motion that I was using on the hi-hat was in fact Moeller. I had been playing that on hats for years and never made the connection until then. When I realized that it was the same motion just in a different application and it clicked. I was able to play Moeller on all surfaces. My hands knew the technique before my mind connected the technical read out of the idea. Often times I find learning to be on several different levels and sometimes when I think that I know a thing, I find months or years down the road how little I had understood that idea and there is so much more to explore in that idea. I am loving the process. I have read that it is the glory of kings to search out a matter and I am finding that to be true in the process of songwriting. Oh the nuggets and gems to be discovered, if only to be enjoyed by myself. :-}

    Great video. It was helpful that you showed two different song forms in the same video so we can compare. I especially liked the catchy rhythm of Benny’s song, and noticed it was a great demonstration of matching lyrics to rhythm. I was a bit confused by the bridge though: Half of the lyrics in the bridge are the same as the last line of the chorus (“Every beat I have left is going to be for you”). I thought the function of a bridge is to introduce NEW content and perspective? But this bridge repeated what we’d just heard and seemed rather like it was establishing a refrain line. My takeaway is there is no black-and-white way to do this. Now I will go learn more about bridges… Thanks as always for inspiring!

    This is still so analytical in nature. Creative inspiration is a hot flash that emerges from almost nothing and you just play with it and explore its potential. If you're gonna put effort somewhere, put effort into helping your subconscious flow and make something happen. Stop being so analytical. Trying to connect with someone on an emotional subconscious level but doing so with... logic? What? You have to source it from your emotional subconscious.
